In 1989, Paul "Doc" Nicelli founded Student Athletes Inc., a non-profit organization, in response to a growing need for an educational and athletic program for disadvantaged youth in the Metropolitan and Tri-State area. "Doc" saw the ever-increasing gap between education and athletics, in addition children’s need to be motivated and supported in both areas in order to succeed in the future.

In 1991, Student Athletes Inc. initiated its first scholarship and financial aid program, providing students with the opportunity to attend private and parochial schools, and eventually proceed to college. Over 95% of Student Athletes participants have completed high school and went on to college.

Since 1989, Student Athletes Inc. has provided to more than 18,000 young athletes with a nurturing environment, where they are given the necessary support and guidance needed to pursue their educational and athletic dreams.

Last year alone, over 1,500 youngsters from New York City and the Tri-State area participated in Student Athletes Inc.’s educational and athletic programs, which in turn help to develop the individual, teaching them self discipline, self esteem, and the skills necessary to achieve success socially, athletically, and most importantly, academically.
